Welcome Back!

Welcome to our class blog! I am excited for a new year and anxious to meet you all.

I hope you will be able to use our blog to stay up to date with what is going on in our classroom as well as a place to easily find information. 

Below are a few important reminders! 

New Holcomb Elementary School Hours are 7:55-3:15.

1st 9 Weeks AR Goal: Read 6 different genres and earn 8 points.                                            - Please have your child read each night.

8:10-8:40 - Math

8:40-9:40 - Differentiated Instruction

9:40-9:55 - Recess

9:55-11:05 - Math

11:05-11:55 - Specials

11:55-12:25 - Handwriting/Read Aloud

12:50-2:25 - English Language Arts

2:25-2:40 - Recess

2:40-3:05 - Science/S.S.

3:05-3:15 - Wrap Up/Dismissal

We only have 9.5 days left of school!

Thank you for helping your child stay focused through these next couple weeks. This is an exciting time for them. While we do have some fun things going on, there is still some learning to do!

Spring Break Fun

This post is a little late, but I promised that kids that I would put up some pictures of my Spring Break with Nais. We had a great time hanging out all week. Our little family took a quick trip to Colorado Springs and enjoyed some beautiful weather.

Reading State Assessments

As you know, your child will take the very important Kansas Reading Test on March 31 and April 1. When I think about how much they have had to learn in third grade, I'm very proud of the effort and dedication so many of them have put forth.

As parents, you have been a very important and powerful influence on how your child has progressed this year. For this reason, I am asking that you (and even other members of your family) take a few minutes to write a short message of support and encouragement to your child. They will read it before testing begins.

After you have written your message, please place it in an envelope and seal it. I will collect the envelopes as they are returned. Your child will be able to refer to your special note each morning before our testing session begins.

Your encouraging words will help your child stay confident and positive each day!


Also, please review their test taking strategies with them.
1. Read through all of the questions.
2. Read the passage.
3. Select the best possible answer and highlight where you found it in the passage.


Additional things to keep in mind for the above dates:

• As much as possible, avoid scheduling appointments for the testing dates.
• Try to have your child get a good night's rest.
• Make sure your child comes to school after eating a healthy breakfast or they may also eat in the cafeteria.
• Try to gently encourage your child to do their very best.
• If you would like to volunteer to bring healthy snacks, such as granola bars, fruit, water, or juice for the week of testing that would be greatly appreciated.

This week your child needs to focus on which words add -s, add-es, and change y to an i and add -es. Also, have them find the base word in each of their spelling words so they can see the difference between the singular and plural forms.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Just a reminder that we have conferences on Thursday and Friday. I am looking forward to sharing your child's progress and success in third grade. Please let me know if you need another reminder as to when your conference is scheduled for.

Please help your child notice the spelling patterns for this week. Numbers 1-15 are new words with the /ou/ sound, which can be spelling with the ou or ow spelling pattern. Numbers 16-18 are review words. The last two words (19 and 20) are challenge words. 

3rd Nine Weeks AR Goal

Our AR goal for this nine weeks is to read four chapter books by the same author and make eight points.

After they read their four books by the same author, they are able to read any other chapter books to meet their 8 points. 

This goal is due on March 12th. 

Please be encouraging your child to be reading a little bit each night so they can meet their goal.

Pennies for Patients

Pennies for Patients benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Students work together to aid thousands of adults and children in their fight against blood cancers. 

Students will collect spare change during a three week period. The change can come from friends, family or underneath the couch cushions. The most important thing is that change is collected!

We have a collection box in our room that your child will be able to put their money into it. All coins and bills will be accepted. It does NOT have to be only pennies! 

Collection Weeks:
February 3-7
February 10-14
February 17-21

Round up your spare change and lets help in the fight against cancer!

There will be a prize for the class that collects the most money!!

Introducing...Nais Chipper Lukens

My maternity leave has officially come to an end and I so appreciate your understanding during this time. I was truly able to enjoy my time with Nais, but am excited to be back to teaching your child. 

Below are a few pictures of my little sweetie.

A little about how he got his name:

Nais is from James Naismith (inventor of basketball and legendary coach at KU) and Chipper is from Chipper Jones (Landon's all time favorite baseball player for the Atlanta Braves). 

Our happy little family...we are so incredibly blessed!
